We do things as a homeowner but ignorantly don’t understand the consequences they are likely to attract.
Some of these are innocently done, and at times even with good intentions in mind.
What we do not realize is that such issues can be a significant blow to the lifespan of your heating and cooling unit. If you invested significantly in your air conditioning unit, then there is no need to let it get destroyed because of neglect carelessly. Unfortunately, this happens more than we care to admit. If you have worked in the HVAC industry as I do, then you may know of a few things that homeowners do that jeopardize their furnace’s longevity. One of these standard practices is leaving the filters on for too long. Any HVAC system’s filter is meant to filter out dirt and debris from the air before it passes through the system for cooling or heating. This way, the resistance caused by these particles is reduced, not to mention the fact that there is less strain on the machinery which means it will not wear out faster than it has to because of working harder than it should. A bonus advantage of replacing and cleaning filters is that it also improves the air quality in the house. Another common practice among homeowners that I have witnessed in my line of work is ignoring repair needs when they occur because of the assumption that minor issues do not require fast action. Many believe that when the problem is not hindering the unit’s running, it does not warrant their attention. Sadly this only leads to more serious issues that may even hinder the unit to the point where the damage becomes irreversible. Most of the issues can be fixed by regular maintenance and monitoring if you work with your HVAC technician.
