Long ago in the afternoons before there were central heating and a/cs, the way my pal and I heated and cooled our homes were way different, however for one, everyone had either a tepid water boiler, a gas heating system or electric heating system for their heating! These were entirely easier to maintain things than a central heating and a/c component in my opinion.
Then for a/c everyone had window a/cs of all shapes and sizes.
There were the larger ones to take care of cooling an entire kitchen part or downstairs of a house. Then there were the medium to small sized ones that would take care of the a/c for a living room, however some folks did not have the luxury of affording window a/c units in those afternoons, so they were stuck with exhaust and direct blow window fans! Which in the hotter areas of the world or when there was a heat wave was not a nice thing and did not much of anything other than blow the heat around worse! I am entirely thankful that things have changed this week when it comes to a/c; And that seasoned window a/c units are dirt cheap and central a/cs can be affordable to average people… Not to mention there are portable space heaters now that can heat rooms in minutes along with portable a/cs that can do the same however with cooling! Heating and a/c technology is a nice thing.
