When we talked to the roofers, we met the people who were supposed to be at the house while we were at work.

When I got home that afternoon, there were only two roofers on the roof, and one looked like he was twelve years old.

I was talking to the foreman, and he told me two of the roofers got ill and had to go home. They had to bring in a replacement roofer or he would need to go home. He couldn’t work on the roof without someone else with him. It would be a safety issue. I understood all about working safely, but was it safe to work with a young boy. He looked at me oddly and asked who I was talking about. I pointed to the boy who was working on the roof. He told me that was his son, and he was almost twenty-five years old, and had been working for the roofing company for almost ten years. I didn’t believe him, but he was taking responsibility for the young roofer while he was at the house. He was a licensed and bonded roofer, and I wouldn’t be held responsible if something happened to the boy. When my daughter got home, she was excited to see the young man on the roof. She told me she had gone to school with him, and it would be nice to talk to him unless he had to rush out when they were done with the roof. I told her I thought the replacement roofer looked like he was twelve years old, and she laughed. She said he was almost a year older than she was.
